Inklings are squids that can transform into a humanoid form. Their instinctual desire for attention and urge to ink their territory can be seen in their Turf War behavior. While it does depend on the individual, Inklings generally become able to transform around age 14, and so that's about when they begin engaging in Turf War battles.
Discovered by Cap'n Cuttlefish and appointed Agent 3 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, a unit battling the Octarian army. Fought against the Octarian army in the underground world where they dwell, Octo Valley. Played a key role in ensuring the safe return of the Great Zapfish, which has been highly valued since ancient times for its role as an energy source.
Some Turf War enthusiasts participate in tournaments held in distant lands.
Seems to be from a somewhat distant region, away from the bustling streets. When she turned 14, she left her home to be where fashion is made, and she now lives on her own in Inkopolis.
While Agent 3 and Cap'n Cuttlefish were investigating the Deepsea Metro, Agent 3 fainted trying to help Agent 8 and Cap'n Cuttlefish. At one point they were brainwashed by Telephone.

Inklings are a species of squid that can change into a humanoid form. Many Inklings look up to the two individuals who seem to be particularly flourishing in the Inkopolis life. Many others, however, just want to have fun.
Many Inklings apply for part-time jobs at Grizzco and work hard to earn cash. Inklings tend to get tired of things easily, but more and more of them get hooked on this job as they put on special equipment and face off against surging Salmonids to collect Golden Eggs. Loving the adrenaline rush, they keep coming back for more. The most successful Inklings earn the title of Profreshional.
Agent 2 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, also known as Marie, fought against the Octarian army with Agent 4 to rescue Callie. Using weapon prototypes manufactured by Sheldon, she succeeds in rescuing Callie, who had been brainwashed by DJ Octavio, leader of the Octarian army.
Their club activities had left them too busy to watch TV for a while, and they didn't know about the Squid Sisters. This meant they had no idea who Marie was when she spoke to them.
Originally from a town about 40 minutes from Inkopolis by train. Because they grew up so close to the city, they don't find it particularly captivating.

A young Octoling brought to the Deepsea Metro by Kamabo Co. as an experiment. Originally a combatant, they were named "Number 10,008" by Kamabo Co., but Cap'n Cuttlefish fondly gave them the name "Agent 8" instead.
Past test subjects were unable to complete all the Deepsea Metro missions satisfactorily, but Agent 8 surpassed all expectations. It's unclear if the groove in Calamari Inkantation is a factor in this.
Feels a strong kinship with Agent 3, imagining them to be incredibly powerful. When they hear Calamari Inkantation, it's like they can actually see Agent 3 there in the battle...
After emerging from the Deepsea Metro to the surface, they inked the NILS Statue in a mere three minutes, with some help from Off the Hook. This would be Agent 8's first Turf War.
Employee at Cooler Heads, a popular shop in Inkopolis. Also runs an online store called SplatNet Gear Shop. Has a shy, withdrawn personality and loves metal music. A clownfish named Moe lives in her hair.
The SplatNet Gear Shop sells special-order products with different ability layouts than you can get from off-the-rack gear. Due to this, the shop enjoys a flood of orders even from Inklings uninterested in the latest fashion. Because Annie's shy, she asks Murch to take care of deliveries in Inkopolis Square.
Sometimes helps Sheldon with decorating the weaponry at Ammo Knights.
Runs Shella Fresh, the shoe store in Inkopolis Square. He has a mature vibe and is content to roll with whatever life throws his way. He likes shoes, and he loves wearing his three favorite pairs all at once.
He has a gentle way with words that makes his customers feel like they're awash in soft bubbles. The customers who visit the store don't seem to think much about it one way or the other, but they do often find themselves having purchased a pair of shoes before they know it.
Originally from the north, this musician left his home region and girlfriend to move to Inkopolis and pursue a career in music.
Not only operates the Deepsea Metro, but also monitors the trials at each station. Dispenses various pieces of advice to test subjects trying to reach the "promised land." Even after Kamabo Co.'s disappearance, he continues to maintain punctual service for those living in the deep sea.
He has a backpack with a shrug-type device attached to it, and when a subject fails in the trials at each station of the Deepsea Metro, he explodes the ink in the device and mercilessly eliminates the subject. There is no hesitation at all; he is simply faithful to his duties.
C.Q. is a life-form created specifically to operate the Deepsea Metro. There's a lot of them, as managing the vast Deepsea Metro is a rather sizable task.
The more innocent and carefree of the Squid Sisters pop duo. Her cousin and partner, Marie, is always there for her when she needs a helping hand. Callie loves the outdoors and never seems to get tired. That boundless energy and curiosity sometimes leads her into trouble though.
While the Squid Sisters's debut single, City of Color, kicked things off, what really propelled them to superstardom was their fourth single, Calamari Inkantation. Callie's solo single, Bomb Rush Blush, was such a bop that even the straight-laced Octarians couldn't help but get up and dance. Tidal Rush, the track from her battle with Marie, has now become the stuff of legend.
After moving on from Inkopolis News, she gave a charming performance in a TV drama. This career move received plenty of news coverage, and Callie also revealed some behind-the-scenes tidbits on her blog.
Their first performance was in Calamari County's annual Youth Folk-Singing Contest. The girls caught the eye of the judge, Shy-Ho-Shy, who went on to become their manager.
As Agent 1 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, she conducted surveillance of the Octarian army together with her grandpa, Cap'n Cuttlefish. However, the escaped DJ Octavio used hypnoshades to control her, bringing her into the Octarian army for a time. She gave the Octarians a makeover, making them and their world much cuter.
A shrimp that lives atop the head of Flow, the clerk at the hat store Headspace. It might look like he's the one always looking out for Flow, but really he needs her as much as she does him. Ever thoughtful, Craymond is careful to maintain a polite tone at all times.
He met Flow when she was on a solo trip. Worried she'd get lost, he ended up spending all his time with her, taking care of her as best he can.
It seems that he handles any parasites that cling to her.
A shrimp who dresses to look like crispy fried food. He was hired to manage Shrimp Kicks in Inkopolis's shopping center, Booyah Base, but later struck out on his own. He now runs a food truck, the Crust Bucket, in fashionable Inkopolis Square. He's always in an energetic mood as he works.
He'll accept tickets obtained in Octo Canyon from the Octarian army or Inkopolis Square from Mr. Grizz in exchange for food and drink. Eating at his establishment gets you more experience points after matches and makes it easier to obtain certain gear abilities.
It seems that the reason they switched from cash to tickets is that the establishment's popularity led to the line getting backed up, causing annoyances for other nearby businesses.
Sometimes Judd and Li'l Judd stare at him hungrily, but he doesn't seem to care.
A living witness to the Great Turf War, he once stood on the front lines in the battle against the Octarians. Also the grandfather of the Squid Sisters. Said to be over a hundred years old.
Cap'n Cuttlefish and his Squidbeak Splatoon fiercely defended the besieged Arowana Castle during the Great Turf War. Years later, when the Octarians started getting up to their old tricks again, he founded a new platoon and enlisted Agent 3.
While investigating the Octarians with Agent 3, he lost his way and ended up in the Deepsea Metro. Eventually he made his way back to the surface, along with his new friend and protégé, Agent 8.
Zapfish placed in the stages in the Octarian world. After a stage is cleared and the Zapfish recovered, a Zapfish doll (handmade by Cap'n Cuttlefish) is left in its place. Look closely, and you can see the seams.
Real name is Craig Cuttlefish.
The leader of the Octarian army engaged in a life-or-death battle with the Inklings. Uses Great Octoweapons to repeatedly invade the squid world. An indomitable Octarian that will always get back up and fight, no matter how many times he's defeated. Unique for his use of wasabi in DJing.
After being defeated by Agent 3, he laid low for a while, but then moved to Octo Canyon and tried invading the squid world again. Using hypnoshades, he successfully brainwashed Callie and got her on his side.
Collaborated with the Squid Sisters years ago as "DJ Octavio" at an underground concert. Needless to say, both the Inklings and the Octarians in attendance were elated.
Dropped a lot of mixes as DJ Octavio, and once hijacked Inkling radio to broadcast a provocative song. The Inklings didn't care because they thought it was a publicity stunt, and they really liked the song.
Lived in harmony with Inklings back when dry land was still plentiful.
A mysterious lady working at the hat store Headspace in Inkopolis Square. She's a big fan of food, drink, and anyone she considers cute. Her age is unknown, but she seems to be older than most of her customers. Craymond lives on top of her head.
She might act and sound a little quirky, but she's a woman of substance. Not to mention her store is packed with the kind of gear that anyone would envy.
While traveling the world, she somehow ended up as a clerk at a hat store. Inkopolis Square truly is full of opportunities!
A giant isopod who can always be found riding around the Deepsea Metro. He might look intimidating, but he's a true gentleman. He says the bag next to him contains "hopes and dreams." Wants to ride up to Inkopolis someday.
Loves mem cakes. As he only managed to acquire two of them, falling short of his dream to collect them all, he'll give you special gear if you show him ones he doesn't have.
"Iso Padre" is not actually his real name.
Owner of Ye Olde Cloth Shoppe in Inkopolis Square. A bowtie-and-hat combo is his trademark look. He learned how to speak to Inklings using an ancient scroll, which is why he has such an old-timey way of speaking.
Always on the cutting edge of trends, his clothing shop is lined with gear. He's recognized as being a fashionista.
Looks a lot like Jelonzo, a clothing-shop owner in Inkopolis, and is often mistaken for him. Even the Squid Sisters get it wrong sometimes. Given that Jelfonzo originally split off from Jelonzo, it's no wonder they look so alike.
In his first appearance in Inkopolis's annual card-game tournament, he took first place. It seems his wide reading of ancient scrolls in order to learn the squid language served as an advantage in the competition.
A clerk at Jelly Fresh, a specialty clothing shop in Booyah Base, Inkopolis, which attracts the fashion-obsessed Inklings. Most jellyfish don't speak squid, but Jelonzo has been studying on his own and can get by. His textbooks are a little antiquated, and his speech can reflect that.
His style has drawn the attention of many Inklings, and some of them buy his shirts to imitate his style. His shop doesn't sell bottoms, though, since jellyfish don't traditionally wear any, due to having so many tentacles.
This charismatic clothing-store clerk switches up his look every day, but that trademark hat? That will never change.
A mysterious cat living leisurely in busy Inkopolis and Inkopolis Square. He's got a keen eye for judging Turf War outcomes and is able to do so instantly. He used to be the only mammal in this world but was later joined in that category by Li'l Judd.
Judd's name became even more appropriate when he later took an interest in judging Turf War battles and discovered he had an aptitude for it. His ability to accurately judge contests allowed for clear Turf War standards, leading to its formal recognition as a competitive sport. When Inklings begin a Turf War, Judd rushes to the stage to determine the area for ink application and to judge which side wins.
It seems he's willing to share battle advice to those who speak to him, putting the knowledge he's cultivated through judging to good use.
Along with his usual meowing, Judd communicates by sending thought waves directly into the minds of those he's speaking to. You can hear his voice guiding you when you first arrive in Inkopolis.
It seems that around the time humankind went extinct, Judd's owner, the professor, gave him an immortality medicine and placed him in a cryogenic sleep chamber. He woke up around 10,000 years later and is still alive today.
One of two mammals in this world. He sits on Judd's belly while Judd sleeps at the foot of Deca Tower in busy Inkopolis Square, but he's not particularly attached to him. Aiming for Judd's seat, he's often plotting to get him out of the picture, but his small size has prevented him from acting on said plans.
Together with Judd, he's responsible for determining who wins Turf War battles. When a team wins, he raises a flag, and when they lose, he falls over on the spot.
He sometimes shares advice with those who talk to him. His guidance covers a variety of matters, such as Ranked Battles and battle techniques.
He is very picky, but he is essentially omnivorous. He likes the crunchy shrimp in Inkopolis Square.
Li'l Judd is a clone of Judd. His cells were placed in the same cryogenic sleep capsule as an insurance measure in case Judd didn't wake up. His origins as a clone are a source of personal anxiety.
A member of the pop group the Squid Sisters. She has unique tastes when it comes to names and takes things at her own pace. She's always thoughtful toward her cousin and bandmate, Callie. She doesn't handle excessive air conditioning or heating very well.
While the Squid Sisters's debut single, City of Color, kicked things off, what really propelled them to superstardom was their fourth single, Calamari Inkantation. As one of the first Inkopolis News cohosts, Marie gained quite the profile in Inkling society. Aside from singing and dancing all night at Splatfests, she's also performed concerts in distant lands.
She's also active as a solo artist and has started a radio program called Marie's Musings for fans preparing to take entrance exams. She's become able to understand struggling Inklings.
As Agent 2 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, she fought against the Octarian army together with her grandpa, Cap'n Cuttlefish. When Callie disappeared, Cap'n Cuttlefish recruited Agent 4 for help.
Seems to have spent her earlier years working at Walleye Warehouse.
One half of Off the Hook, another pop duo with a unique sound. Absolutely adores and looks up to Pearl. Has top-notch DJ skills, but also an incredible singing voice. Major fan of the Squid Sisters.
Took over Inkopolis News in Inkopolis Square after the Squid Sisters left. While it's now pretty commonplace, Marina was one of the first Octarians to move to the surface.
The Shifty Station, a series of stages used in Splatfests, was built by Marina. She's incredibly skilled at operating heavy equipment and can easily erect a massive stage overnight.
Marina is a former elite Octarian and was involved in the design of the Flooder and other Great Octoweapons. While in DJ Octavio's wasabi-supply unit, she heard Calamari Inkantation and fell in love with the sound. Later, she met Pearl on the surface at Mt. Nantai.
Likes shojo manga and secretly practices drawing techniques.
Clownfish living in Annie's hair and working part-time at a popular headgear shop in Inkopolis. He has a sharp tongue and is often rude to those who visit the shop. But he always remains hidden, never coming out from Annie's hair. In this regard, he's quite similar to the shy Annie.
He looks well-fed, thanks to Annie giving him snacks.
A mysterious entity who may or may not actually exist. Appears to be in charge of Grizzco, which hires for part-time jobs where employees splat incoming Salmonids. However, no one has actually seen him. They've only ever heard his voice emanating from a wooden bear carving.
Offers part-time jobs where employees splat Salmonids swimming upstream and collect Golden Eggs. There's no overtime, and the benefits are solid too, with transportation and uniforms both provided. The gig offers payment in the form of gear, cash, and tickets that can be exchanged at the Crust Bucket, enticing some Inklings to forgo matches and work day and night instead.
The Golden Eggs collected by workers can also be put to use as a potent energy source. The details are still a bit of a mystery, but it seems like they do contribute to the Inkling world's energy supply.
Occasionally offers part-time work featuring illegitimately modified weaponry. With thrills you can't get from matches, some Inklings seem to have grown a bit addicted to it...
A kid who's set up shop in Inkopolis Square, offering the chance to change gear abilities. Building off Spyke's teachings, he's created his own unique style of business.
Just like Spyke, Murch can change gear abilities, but he also has the tech to add abilities using ability chunks obtained from scrubbing gear. This makes it a lot easier to get the gear ability you want and has given rise to whispers among the Inklings that he's actually more skilled than Spyke.
Also runs an intermediary service, delivering orders placed through the SplatNet Gear Shop. After ordering, it usually takes one day for items to arrive.
Originally from the same area as Spyke, Murch moved to Inkopolis after reading an article detailing Spyke's amazing success. For his ability-changing services, Murch has a hard requirement of payment in Super Sea Snails and refuses to take cash. This means he's probably not raking it in as much as Spyke.
Flow seems very fond of him, but Murch gets a little annoyed with her attentions.
An inhabitant of the underground octopus world, also called the Octarian world. Used to live aboveground, but moved underground after being defeated in the Great Turf War that took place when the sea levels rose. Diligently works to systematically keep the Octarians in line using music.
Possesses highly developed scientific technology, beginning with the Great Octoweapons. His tech capabilities are said to be a full 15 years ahead of the global average. He's so completely focused on his mission that he's totally unconcerned with his appearance.
Thanks to DJ Octavio recruiting Callie, the formerly drab octopus world is now much cuter.
There are two types of Octarian: ones that remain individual tentacles after separation, and ones that gain the ability to take humanoid form. It seems that the more limbs they have, the higher their intelligence.
The Kamabo Co. "sanitizes" the Octarians in the Deepsea Metro, "nurturing" them in a way that destroys the individual self. This process is deemed necessary for each one to function as a part of the greater artifice designed for each station.
One half of Off the Hook, another pop duo with a unique sound. Her voice truly is almost too much for one person, having the capability to decimate all if used at full power. After meeting Marina, though, she successfully learned how to control it. Her talent has blossomed, and she's now at the top of the rap game.
Took over hosting Inkopolis News in Inkopolis Square after the Squid Sisters left. For a while, Pearl had a one-sided jealous rivalry going with the former hosts, but she eventually hit it off with them after performing a concert together in a far-away land.
While doing some vocal warmups on Mt. Nantai, Pearl received a transmission from Agent 8, who was fighting down in Deepsea Metro. She rushed in on a helicopter to pick up Agent 8 after they emerged from underground.
She earned the nickname of "Club Destroyer" because of her incredibly powerful voice, which truly has the potential to decimate all. When she's really getting into things, she'll often jump side to side to get everyone hyped. "Boo-YAAAH!"
She's the daughter of a multimillionaire and has endless anecdotes about her opulent childhood. Her dad owns Camp Triggerfish and once gave his daughter an exact copy of the Manta Maria as a birthday present.
Salmon that can live both underwater and on land. Multiple types have been discovered. They go out clad in cookware, hoping to be cooked in a delicious way, and they swim upstream to where they were spawned. They're also adept at weaponizing junk found in the sea.
The Salmonid music corps includes a three-piece band called ω-3 (Omega-3). They use a unique combination of cello, timpani, and a DJ to create irregular beats in 7/8 time that inspire Salmonids. The music captivates many of the part-time workers.
According to folklore, when smoke arose from the seven rings, a large number of Salmonids headed to the surface and proceeded to eat everything.
The Salmonids have worked out a treaty of sorts with the Octarians. In exchange for Octarian technology, they distribute Power Eggs throughout the Octarian world.
The owner of weapon shop, Ammo Knights. The original store, found in busy Inkopolis's Booyah Base, has been in operation since his grandfather's generation. He later opened a second location in the fashionable shopping center of Galleria, Inkopolis Square. He lives to manufacture and remodel weaponry.
Weapons fanatic with an incredible knowledge of his area of expertise. Chat with him at his shop, and he'll enthusiastically yak your ear off. He's completely unaware that his customers just think he's long-winded.
He has another hustle as well: supplying prototype weapons in exchange for data collected by Agent 3 and Agent 4 from their experiences fighting the Octarian army. The Hero Shot is super effective against Octarians—so much so that it is disallowed in Turf War battles due to throwing off the overall balance.
The building containing the Booyah Base belongs to Sheldon's family. It's said that his grandfather, Ammoses Shellendorf, made a fortune by developing weapons for Octarians during the Great Turf War.
His ever-present goggles are actually just really strong glasses. Spending so much time making minute adjustments to weapons day after day has caused him to completely ruin his eyesight.
A sea urchin doing shady business in a back alley of busy Inkopolis. It's said he made over a hundred million in cash. Lately he's handed the business off to Murch and can be found on his laptop at fashionable Inkopolis Square cafés, working to keep the goods flowing and the profits moving in the right direction.
In exchange for Super Sea Snails, he'll reroll gear abilities. Since his arrival, the Inklings have all been clamoring to get their gear customized.
From the northern region. Sea urchins are really good at getting through the tough shells of Super Sea Snails, using their own needles to dexterously remove what's inside.
A retro telephone installed on one of the platforms in Deepsea Metro's Central Station. Visitors are encouraged to complete missions at each metro station and collect the four thangs so that they may reach the "promised land."
Its real name is Commander Tartar. It's an AI that was created 12,000 years ago to collect data on new forms of intelligent life, while also keeping Kamabo Co. running in the long-term. This mission statement also includes procuring new test subjects.
The AI for Commander Tartar was created by the professor—the same scientist who induced Judd's cryogenic slumber—with the hope that intelligent life born far in the future wouldn't repeat the same mistakes humankind made.
It seems that over 10,000 years of isolation has gotten to Telephone, the loneliness driving it into an out-of-control rampage.
Inklings, squid that can transform into a humanoid form. Many squid seem to look up to two individuals who are particularly flourishing in Inkopolis life. Still, squid will be squid, and there's plenty of them who just want to have fun.
Many Inklings apply for part-time jobs at Grizzco and work hard to earn cash. Her club activities had left her too busy to watch TV for a while, and she didn't know about the Squid Sisters of Callie and Marie. This meant she had no idea who Marie was when she spoke to her.
